🌠 Perseids (Meteor Shower)
8-14 August 2024
23:30 - 01:00
The annual Perseids meteor shower is due to peak on 12-13 August. There can be up to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. Hopefully, it should be possible to see a few from our location if the sky is clear.
The meteor shower is best viewed under dark skies after midnight!
🌍 Latitude Locator
Thursday, 25 July 2024
20:30 - 22:00
Let's make a latitude locator, a handheld device that can be used at night to determine how far north you are. All we need is paper, card, string, double-sided tape, electrical tape, and a metal washer.
If the sky is clear, we'll face north and test out our devices by pointing them at Polaris, the north star.

🌕 Full Moon
Sunday, 21 July 2024
22:30 - 23:30
Tonight is the night of July's full Moon, known as the Buck Moon because July is when male deer start to regrow their antlers.
Whether we'll be able to see it will depend on the weather and if the park is still open - so our chances aren't very good 😔.
★ Summer Constellations
Friday, 19 July 2024
22:00 - 23:30
We'll aim to see a few summer constellations like Hercules, Lyra, and Cygnus, as set out in the July Action Plan.
The ISS will be passing over at 22:50 (mag -3.3).
We might be able to see the Moon and more constellations if the park is still open.
🌓 The Moon (Daytime Astronomy)
Sunday, 14 July 2024
19:00 - 19:45
The Moon will be roughly 60% illuminated and due south at 19:00. Our aim is to observe the lunar craters in the daylight and compare the view to how it looks at nighttime.
